Father and daughter smiling having a picnic during autumn in the Main Line area of Philadelphia

Fall is around the corner, which means it’s not long before we’ll be sipping pumpkin spice lattes, getting our sweaters out of storage, and feeling the crisp autumn breeze sweeping through the streets of Philadelphia. The Main Line area offers a range of enriching and entertaining activities and adventures for couples and families to experience the magic of the season.

Country Roads

Escape the bustle of the city and check out the colorful tapestry of reds, oranges, and golds with a scenic drive in the backroads of Amish country. This part of the state is not only incredibly picturesque but also unbelievably peaceful. You’ll drive past rolling farmland, farm stands, babbling brooks, covered bridges, and even a horse-drawn buggy or two. The following routes are guaranteed to delight the senses with stunning landscapes and quaint and charming small towns.

Want to stretch your legs? Lace up your hiking boots and discover the region’s most beautiful trails, such as the Schuylkill River Trail, the Valley Forge National Historical Park, or the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. Time in nature is proven to be good for the body, mind and soul! And of course, it’s FREE so you can venture out knowing that your budget is happy and healthy, too.

Fright Nights

In our book, it’s never too early to plan for Halloween. Ring in spooky season with a frightful ghost tour from Grim Philly, or if you’re feeling really brave, explore the “Terror Behind the Walls” in an abandoned prison. It’s true! Every evening in September through November, the Eastern State Penitentiary opens its cell blocks to create an immersive and terrifying experience full of thrills and chills. In addition to five different haunted house attractions, the historic site also features educational and interpretive tours and themed bars and lounges with live music. Trick or treat, indeed!

Fun on the Farm

The fall season simply wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the pumpkin patch. Head to one of the dozens of nearby farms and orchards to pick the juiciest apples or the perfect gourd for carving or decorating. Sure, you could stop by your local grocery store for these, but if you want the full fall experience (and to support local business), you’ve got to get it straight off the vine.

These farms also offer delightful corn mazes, hay rides, pony rides, and apple cannons that promise a fun-filled day for the whole family. Don’t forget to come hungry, because you can also enjoy the freshest culinary delights like hard-pressed apple cider, cider donuts, and warm apple pies topped with homemade ice cream. We’re salivating just thinking about it!

Party in the Streets

One of our favorite places to experience the magic of fall is Peddler’s Village, a 42-acre attraction in Bucks County that offers year-round shopping, dining, lodging, and entertainment. They have so many memorable seasonal events for the whole family and they all kick off on Labor Day, when more than 100 scarecrows, ranging from silly to scary, pop up all over the village as part of an annual competition for local residents and organizations. Make sure to also pencil in their annual OctoberFeast party featuring local food trucks, beer tastings, and traditional folk music.

Want more? Every autumn, the streets of Philadelphia and the Main Line come alive with fall festivals and harvest celebrations featuring local artisans, heritage crafts, live music, seasonal treats and activities for all ages. For the full round-up of events in the area, check out these sites’ online calendars:

Man and woman smiling after Philadelphia LaMiNa procedure with Dr. Claytor

Dr. R. Brannon Claytor, Chief of Plastic Surgery for Main Line Health, is a nationally-recognized double board-certified Philadelphia plastic surgeon who performs a unique facial cosmetic procedure called a “LaMiNa” (Laser + Microneedling + Nanofat), also known as a Biologics + CO2 Laser Skin Tightening (BLT) treatment, to significantly enhance facial rejuvenation outcomes for his Bryn Mawr and Greater Philadelphia patients. This innovative approach to skin renewal stemmed from Dr. Claytor’s personal research, which showed that this novel treatment combination achieves faster, more robust results than individual treatments alone.

Here, Dr. Claytor explains how he uses these treatments and the science behind their efficacy to significantly improve signs of aging and overall skin vitality.

Treatment overview

Before we explore the advantages of LaMiNa skin tightening, it’s helpful to understand each procedure in its own right to fully grasp what the treatments can synergistically achieve.

Nanofat

Biologics are derived from living organisms, and in this case, from your own purified fat called nanofat. Nanofat includes naturally occurring substances our bodies produce, such as growth factors, stem cells, and cytokines.

Using nanofat in aesthetics harnesses your body’s natural healing and regenerative capabilities in several ways:

  • Stimulates regeneration. Biologic elements in nanofat help stimulate the production of new, healthy cells for rejuvenated skin that looks & feels younger and more vibrant.
  • Enhances healing. Nanofat improves the healing process, reducing recovery time and maximizing aesthetic outcomes.
  • Promotes collagen production. Collagen is a key protein that provides structure and elasticity to our skin. Nanofat increases collagen production to restore the skin’s natural elasticity and firmness.

CO2 Laser Skin Tightening

CO2 Laser Skin Tightening uses a high-energy beam of light that precisely targets specific areas to improve the appearance of various skin concerns, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

  • Precision treatment. The controlled laser energy penetrates the skin’s deeper layers to treat skin concerns without damaging the surrounding tissues.
  • Increased collagen production. The heat from the laser energy contracts and tightens collagen fibers and initiates the development of new fibers to significantly improve skin firmness and elasticity.
  • Skin resurfacing. CO2 laser treatment reduces the appearance of age spots, acne scars, and other skin imperfections, resulting in smoother, more even-toned skin.

Dr. Claytor also employs a microneedling technique for better absorption of the nanofat; microneedling (or RF microneedling) is a very effective standalone cosmetic treatment to improve the appearance of dull skin tone, uneven skin texture, fine lines, large pores, and pigmentation irregularities. Dr. Claytor has been published in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal for his research on “Microneedling Outcomes in Early Postsurgical Scars,” which showed the efficacy of microneedling treatments for improved surgical scar appearance—findings that support his comprehensive approach to skin rejuvenation.

Patient shown before and 6 weeks after LaMiNa treatment.
This 55-year-old patient received a LaMiNa treatment to her face. Her before photos (right) show brown spots and deeply etched facial and lip lines. The after photos (left) highlight how the treatment corrected the pigmentation irregularities and achieved shorter, softer facial and lip lines. The increased collagen production also adds youthful volume for a naturally lifted appearance.

The LaMiNa procedure

This procedure revolutionizes the field of skin rejuvenation and sets a precedent for how expert plastic surgeons can achieve stronger aesthetic improvement without extending recovery times or solely relying on more invasive procedures. Dr. Claytor has an extensive clinical background in aesthetic medicine and has developed a treatment protocol optimized to achieve noteworthy results with minimal downtime:

Step 1: Fat harvesting and preparation. Fat is harvested using a tiny incision and thin cannula from the belly or thighs. It is then meticulously emulsified to access the nanofat.

Step 2: CO2 laser treatment. Dr. Claytor ablates the desired treatment area at an ideal depth of 2-3 mm to cause a controlled amount of thermal damage to resurface the skin and boost collagen production.

Step 3: Microneedling. Micro-punctures in the newly ablated tissue allow for deeper penetration of the nanofat and an enhanced healing response.

Step 4: Nanofat. The nanofat is introduced to the treated tissue to allow the growth factors, stem cells, and cytokines to amplify the skin’s regenerative abilities and thicken the reticular dermis (the bottom layer of connective tissue that supports the skin).

Patient shown before and 3 months after face and neck rejuvenation with MyEllevate suture, fat grafting to the face, and LaMiNa skin resurfacing.
This 67-year-old patient received face and neck rejuvenation with MyEllevate neck lift suture, fat grafting to the face, and LaMiNa skin resurfacing. Notice the significant improvement in vertical lip lines and how the nasolabial folds are softer and more symmetric. This patient’s overall skin texture and tone also shows stunning improvement that takes years off of her appearance.

Dr. Claytor’s personal research showed that this treatment combination achieves faster, more robust results than individual treatments alone.

Key advantages of LaMiNa skin tightening

LaMiNa skin tightening presents a groundbreaking approach to skin rejuvenation that leverages the body’s natural healing mechanisms and cutting-edge laser technology. Dr. Claytor’s advanced LaMiNa treatment protocol provides several key advantages:

  • Minimally invasive. The procedure can be performed using a local anesthetic in our med spa and requires a very short incision for virtually no visible scarring.
  • Short recovery time. Local anesthesia means patients can immediately resume most daily activities. Patients typically take about 1-2 weeks of social downtime to allow redness to resolve and to protect healing tissues from UV exposure to prevent potential damage and scarring.
  • Immediate and long-lasting results. Initial improvements in wrinkles and skin tightness and texture are visible early on, and these results improve over time as the healing and regenerative processes are carried out.
  • Versatility. This treatment can be applied to multiple areas of the face to treat vertical lines above the lips (smoker’s lines), marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and other unwanted wrinkles. It can also be used in several ways:

Philadelphia facelift surgeon in his viral video explaining deep plane facelifts
Philadelphia plastic surgeon Dr. R. Brannon Claytor explains deep plane facelift surgery and how it differs from an SMAS facelift in a video for his patients, only to discover that many other people love the video and have the same questions about the procedure.

Bryn Mawr, PA, June 28, 2023/PRNewswire/—Dr. Claytor first recorded his video about deep plane facelifts because so many patients were asking the same questions during consultations. In the video, Dr. Claytor stands in front of a dry erase board and speaks for a little more than twelve minutes, drawing illustrations as he goes, explaining the finer details of facial anatomy and facelift procedures in clear language anyone can understand. After receiving positive feedback from patients who watched the video, he uploaded the video to YouTube so that it would be easier to share with others. 14,000 views later, it is clear the video has a large audience and regular comments show appreciation for his presentation of a complex topic.

Dave Busan, a YouTube commenter, echoed what more than one of the other commenters had also said when he posted, “The best explanation of the deep plane facelift on YouTube!”

Dr. Claytor is a board-certified plastic surgeon renowned for his comprehensive understanding of facelift techniques, and he is also well known for his kind bedside manner and patient-first approach to his medical practice. Both ideas come across in the video.

“I wasn’t thinking about publishing a video on YouTube when I filmed it,” Dr. Claytor reports, “I was just thinking about what I would want you to know about this surgical procedure. Watching it now, it’s fun to realize I may have filmed a particularly helpful video on a topic that people are interested in and I’m glad it has a larger audience.”

In the video, Dr. Claytor goes into a level of detail that is uncommon outside of medical training, but does so without leaving the viewer overwhelmed. Even if someone is not interested in cosmetic surgery, his explanation of how a deep plane facelift repositions the retaining ligaments that tether the SMAS layer to the facial bones is very satisfying to watch, especially as he sketches a perfect side view of the human face and proceeds to draw the musculature of the face while speaking to the viewer.

According to Dr. Claytor, the deep plane facelift is a highly effective solution for patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their jowls, neck, and cheeks due to aging. The procedure involves small incisions that are hidden along the ear and hairline, which are well-disguised after healing.

When asked how many takes it took to film the video, Dr. Claytor had this to say: “This was the first and only take. Sometimes it all comes together and you get it right. I talk in the video just like I do when I meet with patients. I want people to be happy with who they are and understand what can be done about an aging face.”

Dr. Claytor is a board-certified plastic surgeon renowned for his comprehensive understanding of facelift techniques, and he is also well known for his kind bedside manner and patient-first approach to his medical practice.

Dr. Claytor serves the Bryn Mawr, Main Line, and greater Philadelphia areas and has been featured in numerous publications for his expertise in facial rejuvenation techniques, including Haute Beauty and Main Line Today. He performs all surgical procedures in his accredited, state-of-the-art surgical facility—with about 90% of facelift surgeries performed as “awake” procedures using local anesthetic for a more comfortable, faster recovery.

New study finds CO2 laser, microneedling, and nanofat can be combined for unprecedented results and less downtime

PHILADELPHIA, May 3, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — A March 2023 study in Aesthetic Surgery Journal found that combining CO2 laser and microneedling anti-aging treatment with nanofat application, or fat taken from one area of the body and applied to the skin, leads to a speedier recovery and less pain. The study authors have dubbed this novel approach “LaMiNa” (Laser, Microneedling, and Nanofat).

“We are thrilled with the results of this study,” said Dr. Brannon Claytor, the study’s lead author and a nationally-renowned expert in facial rejuvenation. “LaMiNa is a game-changer for patients in need of an efficient, effective non-surgical anti-aging option, as treatment is quick and easy for the patient, yet still offers impressive results when it comes to reducing the appearance of perioral wrinkles and other signs of aging.”

Tissue samples, in addition to patients’ before and after photos, showed noteworthy results: when laser and microneedling were combined with nanofat, skin cells showed less inflammation 4 days post-procedure, indicating quicker healing. Additionally, there was evidence of increased cell turnover—the process that leads to a more youthful skin appearance.

Both laser skin resurfacing and microneedling are well-established mainstays for improving skin texture, softening the appearance of wrinkles, and reducing the visibility of age spots. They do so by selectively damaging the skin to promote a healing response, in which the body supplies the skin with new healthy cells and increased collagen and elastin. But significant skin resurfacing treatments typically come with side effects: pain, swelling, redness, discoloration, or peeling are common.

Combining CO2 laser, microneedling, and nanofat application led to a speedier recovery and less pain for facial rejuvenation patients. This patient is pictured (A) before, (B) immediately after, (C) 2 weeks after, (D) 2 months after, and (E) 6 months after treatment.

Dr. Claytor’s new approach offers less downtime while increasing the treatments’ effectiveness in a single combined treatment, thanks to the healing stem cells and regenerative properties of nanofat.

“The addition of nanofat speeds up the recovery time, while also helping with post-treatment pain,” Dr. Claytor explained. “We have effectively solved patients’ two biggest concerns about getting combined laser treatment and microneedling for wrinkles.”

Woman touching tummy tuck scars that have been treated with microneedling

Plastic surgeons often say that there’s no such thing as a scarless plastic surgery: simply put, incisions are required for effective surgical shaping and lifting, and that creates scars. Experienced board certified plastic surgeons take great care to inconspicuously place incisions and limit their size—but it is natural to want any resulting scars to fade as quickly as possible.

As an elite Philadelphia plastic surgeon, Dr. R. Brannon Claytor is at the forefront of exploring methods for reducing their appearance. Here, we share the latest proven approaches to plastic surgery scar care.

Common scar care methods after plastic surgery

To speed along the process of scar “maturity,” plastic surgeons routinely advise their patients to use scar strips, scar gel, and even scar massage. But in recent years, collagen remodeling treatments like laser treatments and microneedling have also emerged as effective scar-minimizing techniques.

Our plastic surgeon’s research and findings

Microneedling, also known as “collagen induction therapy,” is an innovative and minimally-invasive skin treatment typically used on the face to treat acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dull skin tone, and enlarged pores. Very fine, hair-like needles are passed over the skin surface to prompt the body’s healing mechanism, promoting fresh collagen and elastin in treated areas for better plumpness, smoothness, coloration, and elasticity. Microneedling has been proven to be a sound treatment for frustrating chronic acne scars, and it is also commonly used for treating stretch marks, which are a form of scar.

While it is impossible to make a facelift or breast lift fully scarless, minimizing post-surgical scars with in-office treatments like microneedling is well-proven and can be a routine part of your cosmetic surgery treatment plan.

While laser skin resurfacing has been a more common option for minimizing post-surgical scars, board certified Philadelphia plastic surgeon Dr. Brannon Claytor saw the effectiveness of microneedling for treating other skin irregularities and its promise for surgical scars. He thus spent the past several years conducting a study into its effects on our Philadelphia plastic surgery patients’ scars. In the study, conducted at our practice here in Bryn Mawr, 25 patients returned to Dr. Claytor for 3 microneedling sessions at regular intervals after surgery.

Plastic surgery scar study results

At just four months post-op, patients treated with microneedling saw significant scar improvement based on 3 different measures, including both doctor and patient ratings. Dr. Claytor’s study also found that those who started microneedling earlier—just 6 weeks after surgery, once the initial healing process was complete—saw even better results at the four-month mark. Previously, most surgeons believed that it was necessary to wait a full year after surgery before using microneedling to improve surgical scars’ appearance.

The research was published in the peer-reviewed journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Claytor is happy to offer this option in our office to his plastic surgery patients after most procedures for the face, breast, and body.

Dr. R. Brannon Claytor’s Philadelphia plastic surgery practice, Claytor Noone Plastic Surgery, is one of a select handful of providers to offer the new, longer-lasting neuromodulator Daxxify beginning Monday, December 12, 2022, ahead of the product’s official launch in summer 2023.

Bryn Mawr, PA, Dec. 13, 2022 /PR Newswire/— R. Brannon Claytor, MD, FACS of Claytor Noone Plastic Surgery, located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, announces that the new, longer-lasting neuromodulator DAXXIFY™ will be available at his practice starting on Monday, December 12, 2022.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. R. Brannon Claytor and his outstanding team of providers are proud to be one of the few medical spas in the Philadelphia area chosen to be a part of Daxxify’s early release, an honor reserved for a small group of highly respected neurotoxin injectors nationwide.

“Patients in the Bryn Mawr, Main Line, and greater Philadelphia areas have long trusted Claytor Noone Plastic Surgery to achieve outstanding results using the most advanced products available on the market,” explains Dr. Claytor. “We are thrilled to be one of the first to offer Daxi, the latest in neuromodulating technology.”

Revance Aesthetics, the maker of Daxxify (or “Daxi”), is pre-releasing their Botox-like injectable to the top 1% of neuromodulator injecting practices in the nation, making Claytor Noone Plastic Surgery part of an elite group of providers selected to offer the product ahead of its official launch in summer 2023.

Daxxify is the first FDA-approved peptide-formulated injectable neuromodulator. Similar to Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®, Daxxify (daxibotulinumtoxinA) works by temporarily blocking nerve signals that cause the facial muscles to contract, relaxing treated muscles and softening expression lines. Daxxify is approved to treat glabellar lines (the frown lines between the eyebrows) and may also be used off-label to treat crow’s feet, forehead lines, or above the lip to create a “lip flip” effect.

Unlike other neuromodulators currently on the market, Daxxify is formulated with a positively charged peptide to extend its anti-aging effects. Clinical trials showed that Daxxify lasted 6-9 months for some patients—which is 2-3 times longer than its competitors, making it a longer-lasting Botox alternative. Additionally, Daxxify does not contain any human or animal byproducts, a plus for those seeking a ‘cleaner’ Botox-type product.

Daxi treatments will be available starting on Monday, December 12, 2022 with Dr. Claytor and Julie Holesh, Physician Assistant and aesthetic injector at Claytor Noone Plastic Surgery. Patients in the greater Philadelphia area are invited to schedule their appointment by calling 610-527-4833 to experience “the neuromodulator of tomorrow” today!

Man at facelift consultation with double board certified plastic surgeon

Men are a growing percentage of facelift patients, and male celebrities, such as fashion designer Marc Jacobs, as well as men across the U.S. are regularly choosing facelift surgery to restore a more youthful appearance. However, not all facelift surgeons understand how the procedure should be modified to preserve a manly appearance. Here, Philadelphia plastic surgeon Dr. R. Brannon Claytor explains how male facelift techniques can help you achieve natural, masculine-looking results.

Facelift surgery was the 6th most popular plastic surgery procedure for men in 2021.

How men’s facelifts differ from women’s

Regardless of your gender, facelifts achieve transformative anti-aging results by tightening the underlying facial musculature, repositioning and removing fat, and excising loose skin—however, facelifts for men feature some minor technical differences from traditional facelifts. Plastic surgeons must consider a number of factors for male patients that can greatly influence results.

Men’s facial hair

Men’s facial hair usually dictates the facelift incision type and placement. Surgeons must be careful to place incisions in a manner that avoids disrupting facial hair follicles or causes excessive scarring which may impact hair patterns and growth. The lifted effect is achieved by pulling the beard line closer to your ear. To conceal the scars, your surgeon will place incisions in front of and behind each ear and within the hairline.

This 62-year-old patient wished to address facial laxity and descent. After photos show results 8 months post deep plane facelift with open platysmaplasty performed under tumescent anesthesia. To see additional photos, please visit our gallery.

Men’s facial structures

As men typically have stronger facial skeletal and ligament structures compared to those of women, surgeon’s should be careful not to excise too much muscle or overly pull the skin—which may create an obviously surgically-altered or feminized appearance.

Male facelifts tend to focus more on the lower half of the face as the loss of youthful fat pads and waning muscle strength, particularly around the jawline and in the mid face, often lead to the appearance of jowls, diminished definition around the jaw and chin, and a drooping facial appearance.

Men’s aesthetic preferences

Men generally seek different facelift outcomes than women. As such, male facelift procedures should be modified to deliver a lifted appearance and remove unwanted bulk from the neck, while preserving classic masculine characteristics including a sharp, well-defined chin and jawline—this is in contrast to the more graceful contours most female facelift patients seek.

It is especially important to avoid surgical overcorrection with male facelift patients; certain indicators of age are positively associated with mature masculinity and contribute to a distinguished appearance.

When the facelift procedure plan extends to full facial rejuvenation including the eyes and brow, here again we must modify the procedure plan. Men generally have fuller eyelids and a heavier brow line, which your surgeon should consider as they rejuvenate these features to avoid creating a feminine or unnatural look. Maintaining a natural shape when addressing the eyes, preserving a masculine degree of upper eyelid hooding, is the mark of an expert plastic surgeon who is highly-experienced with male facial rejuvenation.

Choose the best facelift procedure for your anatomy

With years of experience offering deep plane facelift in the Main Line and Philadelphia area, Dr. Claytor finds this technique is almost always the most effective procedure for achieving natural-looking results for men. Men’s skin is heavier and thicker, especially around the jaw and neck areas, and this advanced technique is well-suited to handling this challenge: a deep plane facelift allows a surgeon to make deeper adjustments to the facial ligaments that tether the SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system), providing more support for the surface skin, resulting in longer-lasting, more natural looking results. By using a deep plane facelift technique, the neck and upper chest of male facelift patients can also be lifted and tightened to achieve a more complete, rejuvenated appearance.

Additionally, deep plane facelifts can be accomplished with fewer incisions—a significant advantage when considering shorter hairstyles and hair loss in men can make concealing facelift scars more challenging.

Only a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in this technique should be trusted to determine if a deep plane facelift is preferable over other facelift procedures for men. An expert surgeon will evaluate your facial structure, skin elasticity, and goals before recommending a treatment plan optimized to achieve lifted yet masculine results.

Add complementary procedures to your facelift

To achieve full rejuvenation in Bryn Mawr, you may consider adding additional procedures and treatments for more complete results.

  • Eyelid lift removes excess fat and skin from the upper and lower eyelids for a refreshed appearance and improved peripheral vision.
  • Brow lift softens deep lines along the forehead and between the eyebrows for a more youthful look.
  • Facial fat grafting uses your own fat to restore youthful volume to the face.
  • Laser skin resurfacing addresses signs of aging and scars on the skin’s surface to “set the clock back” even further.
  • Neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport minimize dynamic wrinkles by temporarily relaxing targeted muscles; they can be invaluable for treating the forehead and eye areas.
  • Advanced dermal fillers like the Revance RHA collection can instantly reduce the appearance of wrinkles and treat a gaunt appearance.
  • Medical-grade skincare products contain greater concentrations of active ingredients to more effectively reduce signs of aging and offer greater protection against environmental damage—extending and complimenting your surgical results.

All surgical facelifts are intended to take years off of your appearance by tightening the muscles and tissue along the jawline, cheeks, and neck—though they differ in technique and cosmetic outcomes. The key difference in a deep plane facelift is that the underlying facial musculature is also treated. This technique provides more support for the SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) and surface sphkin, resulting in longer-lasting, more natural-looking results. Here, double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. R. Brannon Claytor answers some of the most common deep plane facelift questions.

Is a deep plane facelift better?

It may be, particularly if addressing your facial aging concerns requires a more comprehensive approach that will treat underlying tissues supporting your skin in addition to surface skin laxity and wrinkles. That said, only a board certified plastic surgeon with years of facial surgery experience should be trusted to determine if a deep plane facelift is preferable over other Philadelphia facelift procedures. Your surgeon should consider your facial structure, skin elasticity and texture, and aesthetic goals before recommending a personalized treatment plan.

Facelift options in the Main Line

A deep plane facelift is ideal for older patients who have moderate to severe symptoms in the mid-face and neck, such as drooping cheeks, visible jowling, excess skin and fat below the chin, and sagging skin in the neck. A deep plane facelift can also address sunken cheeks and a hollow eye appearance.

A SMAS plication facelift benefits patients who have mild to moderate symptoms in the mid-face and neck and desire a more defined jawline, volumized cheek area, and tighter neck. This is achieved using layers of sutures in the SMAS that lift the skin laterally towards the hairline; any excess skin and fat are also removed. The underlying ligaments that are tightened in a deep plane facelift are not disturbed.

A full facelift is the traditional skin and fat excision procedure for patients who wish to achieve a considerable lift in the mid face and neck region.

A short scar facelift or “ponytail facelift” technique is excellent for younger patients and professionals who have mild symptoms in the lower mid-face and jawline.

A mini facelift is a great option for patients who find they need more than injectable dermal fillers to maintain a youthful appearance, but prefer minimal downtime.

Is deep plane facelift recovery different from SMAS facelift recovery?

Yes, slightly—because a deep plane facelift allows the skin and SMAS to remain attached, this technique causes less trauma so recovery time can be shorter. Facial compression wraps and wound care instructions will be similar between both facelift techniques. Most patients feel comfortable going out in public after about two weeks.

Does a deep plane facelift cost more?

Yes; a deep plane facelift typically costs more as it requires additional skill and precision compared to other face lifting techniques. The technique goes beyond the SMAS to tighten the ligaments that support the muscle and skin and, during this process, the facial nerves that run along the ligaments must remain intact to avoid nerve damage. This means it is very important to choose a surgeon with proven deep plane facelift expertise, versus choosing a provider based on pricing alone.

Does a deep plane facelift leave more scars?

No; because the face is lifted at a deeper level with minimal tension placed on the skin, healing incisions will not be under stress and, once healed, any scarring should be nearly invisible. Additionally, deep plane facelift incisions are strategically placed around the contours of the ears and within the hairline to hide them from view.

How long do deep plane facelifts last?

When performed by an experienced board certified plastic surgeon, most patients enjoy their deep plane facelift results for 10-15 years and beyond. Surgeons credit the longevity of these results to the deeper adjustments made during surgery. Though a deep plane facelift will not stop the natural aging process, the skin and SMAS are better supported by underlying ligaments to create long-lasting, natural-appearing results.

Are there deep plane facelift complications?

With any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications. Deep plane facelifts carry a greater risk of nerve damage than other facelift techniques as deeper manipulation in areas near facial nerves is required.

Most deep plane facelift complications are not life-threatening. Surgical safety is dependent on the surgeon’s technique and experience, using an accredited operating facility with proper systems in place, and safe anesthesia administration.

To minimize the risk of complications, your surgeon will thoroughly evaluate your medical history and overall health. You must be completely honest about your habits, medications, and more to ensure you can safely undergo surgery. Notably, facelift surgery should be avoided by patients who smoke—skin flap necrosis is 12 times more likely to occur after undergoing a facelift in active smokers. Faithfully following pre and post-surgery instructions will further minimize complications.

How do I find a deep plane facelift surgeon in Bryn Mawr?

Choose a board certified plastic surgeon who has performed many deep plane facelifts: successful results depend on maintaining the integrity of the delicate facial nerves so proven experience in this specific technique is non-negotiable. Your surgeon should be willing to discuss your goals, both the risks and the benefits of this procedure, and communicate realistic expectations. Any surgeon you consider should also be able to show you before and after photos of patients with similar concerns they have treated, to prove they can successfully provide results you find attractive.
