SmartLipo® for Men (Laser Liposuction)

Reduce stubborn fat deposits and tighten & smooth skin with less downtime.

For men in the Bryn Mawr/Main Line area of Philadelphia looking for an alternative to traditional liposuction, SmartLipo® can help you lose stubborn fat and tighten skin on your face and body to reveal your natural muscle tone with fewer incisions, less downtime, and no general anesthesia.

What is SmartLipo for men?

SmartLipo, also known as laser liposuction, uses triple wavelength laser technology to melt away unwanted fat around the muscles and tighten loose, sagging skin. SmartLipo’s newest Triplex technology allows its laser’s wavelengths to be used independently or together for optimum fat burning. SmartLipo has been FDA-approved for over 13 years and its efficacy has been proven by numerous medical studies.

Here’s how it works: the laser goes to work dissolving body and/or facial fat, which your body naturally processes and excretes. A very small tube (called a cannula) is inserted into the treatment area to remove any excess liquid that may accumulate.

What areas of the body can SmartLipo treat?

Because of the smaller cannula used and its ability to tighten skin as it dissolves fat, SmartLipo is ideal for areas of the male face that traditional liposuction can’t adequately address, such as the jowls, chin, jaw, and neck.

SmartLipo is also highly effective at contouring areas of the body, including the:

  • Abdomen
  • Back & flanks (“love handles”)
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Upper arms

What are the benefits of SmartLipo for men?

Men’s SmartLipo is incredibly effective at revealing a man’s natural muscle tone and defining his face, neck, & jawline. SmartLipo’s benefits also include:

  • Reduces exercise-resistant fat pockets and boosts your body’s natural collagen levels, prompting your body to heal itself quickly
  • Smaller and fewer scars than traditional liposuction
  • Fewer potential complications than traditional liposuction because it uses local anesthesia and requires fewer incisions
  • Results can be seen immediately
  • Minimally invasive, meaning less trauma on surrounding tissue
  • Requires little downtime

SmartLipo vs. men’s liposuction

One of the major advantages of SmartLipo is its ability to tighten and smooth skin as it removes fat. With traditional liposuction, men can be left with loose, sagging skin after fat is removed if their skin lacks elasticity—but SmartLipo’s laser technology heats tissues to encourage collagen production in the skin for smoother, more even contours.

And unlike traditional liposuction, SmartLipo for men can address embarrassing cellulite that accumulates on the body over time.

  • Quicker Recovery: SmartLipo offers less trauma to the body, minimal downtime, and reduced discomfort compared to traditional liposuction.
  • Precision Fat Targeting: With focused energy delivery, SmartLipo allows controlled and accurate fat reduction and body sculpting.
  • Skin Tightening: The procedure stimulates collagen production, leading to immediate and progressive improvement in skin tightness.
  • Minimized Scarring: The need for only micro-incisions reduces visible scarring, with the laser technology also aiding in scar prevention.

Smartlipo: A minimally invasive liposuction technique that uses laser energy to liquefy fat before it’s removed, resulting in less trauma to the body and shorter recovery times.

Liposuction: A surgical procedure used to remove excess fat from specific areas of the body to contour and shape it.

Laser Lipolysis: A medical procedure that uses laser energy to break down fat cells in the body, often used for body contouring and fat removal purposes.

Cannula: A small, thin tube used during liposuction procedures to suction out liquefied fat from the body.

Tumescent Solution: A solution consisting of saline, a local anesthetic (usually lidocaine), and a vasoconstrictor (usually epinephrine), which is injected into the fatty tissue to minimize bleeding and bruising during liposuction.

Vaser Liposuction: A liposuction technique that uses ultrasound waves to break down fat cells before removing them from the body, known for its precision and ability to preserve surrounding tissues.

Adipose Tissue: The body’s main form of fat storage, serving as both a cushion for protecting organs and a source of energy.

Body Contouring: Surgical procedures designed to improve the appearance of the body by removing excess fat and skin and toning underlying tissue.

Subcutaneous Fat: The layer of fat found just beneath the skin’s surface, which can contribute to the appearance of a softer or less toned physique.

Suction-Assisted Liposuction (SAL): A traditional liposuction technique where a cannula is moved back and forth to break up fat cells, which are then suctioned out.

Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL): A form of liposuction where the cannula used has a vibrating tip, making it easier to break up and remove fat.

Recovery Time: The period necessary for a patient to heal and recuperate following a surgical procedure.

Compression Garment: Specialized clothing worn after body contouring surgery to reduce swelling and support the affected areas as they heal.

Anesthesia: Medications used during procedures to prevent pain, with types ranging from local (numbing a small area) to general (where the patient is unconscious).

Incision: A surgical cut made in the skin during a procedure; in liposuction, incisions are usually small and strategically placed to minimize visible scarring.

Bruising and Swelling: Common, temporary side effects following surgery where affected areas of the body may change color and enlarge due to the body’s natural healing process.

Contraindications: Specific conditions or factors that increase the risks associated with a medical procedure, making it inadvisable.

Downtime: The period post-surgery where patients are advised to rest and refrain from their typical activities, such as work and exercise, to facilitate healing.

Localized Fat: Fat deposits that are concentrated in a particular area of the body, often resistant to diet and exercise.

Are there any risks associated with men’s SmartLipo?

SmartLipo has very few risks, especially when compared to traditional liposuction. The risk of blood loss (one of the greatest risks associated with traditional liposuction) is reduced by more than 50% during men’s SmartLipo because of the smaller (and fewer) number of incisions required, and the increased blood vessel coagulation and skin healing provided by the laser.

SmartLipo is considered a minimally invasive surgery and therefore still carries some risks, including:

  • Bruising
  • Infection
  • Thermal burns
  • Scarring

Who is a good candidate for SmartLipo?

While SmartLipo can be used on a variety of men, it is most effective for those who:

  • Are in generally good physical shape and want to spot-reduce extra fat deposits
  • Want to sculpt their body without traditional liposuction
  • Want to avoid general anesthesia and minimize their recovery time
  • Don’t smoke
  • Plan to maintain a healthy lifestyle following surgery, including diet and exercise
  • Have realistic expectations of their results

It’s important to note that the amount of fat that can be eliminated by SmartLipo depends on the size of your body, your body composition, and your treatment area(s). Dr. Claytor will be happy to discuss whether you are a good candidate for SmartLipo.

What is male SmartLipo surgery & recovery like?

During SmartLipo surgery, a topical cream is used to completely numb the treatment area so that patients are comfortable and don’t experience any pain. Once the area is fully numb, very tiny incisions are placed in the skin and a micro-cannula (a very small, hollow tube) is inserted underneath the skin.

The laser’s heat energy immediately goes to work melting fat and tightening skin, and any excess fatty fluid is suctioned out of the body through the cannula. Because of the numbing cream, you’ll only feel some slight pressure and movement. Many of our patients listen to music or read a magazine while getting SmartLipo. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the area(s) of treatment.

After your SmartLipo treatment, you’ll need to wear a compression garment for a few weeks to allow your skin to adapt to your body’s new contours. You can expect to feel sore for several days after your SmartLipo procedure and may experience some minimal bruising and swelling, but these symptoms will dissipate over the next few weeks.

You should be able to resume normal activities the day after your procedure (including going back to work if your job isn’t physically demanding), but avoid strenuous physical activity for up to a week. You can expect to see your SmartLipo results as soon as your swelling goes away (usually after a month), with final results becoming apparent around 6 months.
